All quilts entered into a judged category of the show will be examined for overall workmanship and appearance.  Two judges certified by the National Quilting Association will evaluate each quilt with others in its category and select the award winners.  Ribbons will be awarded in each judged category for 1st, 2nd, 3rd, and Honorable Mention when deemed worthy by the judges.  Special awards include Best of Show, Laurene Sinema Award for Outstanding Workmanship, Excellent Use of Color, Exemplary Hand Quilting, Exemplary Professional Machine Quilting, Exemplary Non-Professional Machine Quilting, and Judges Choice Awards.

Meet the Judges for the 2018 Quilt Show

Karen Blocher Karen took her first quilting class in 1998, and has been involved ever since. She quickly joined the local quilting guild, where she held several offices and committee chairs.  She served on the Board of Directors for the Indiana Heritage Quilt Show from 2000-2012, including two terms as Chairman of the Board. She was Secretary for the National Quilting Association from 2008 through 2012, and was a Co-Director of the National Quilting Association’s Annual Show in 2012 and 2013.  She has been part of the management teams for 16 regional and national quilt shows and competitions.

Karen is a National Quilting Association Certified Quilt Judge, and has judged locally, regionally and nationally since 2000. She has been involved in the judging of more than 10,000 quilts. She is a member of the National Association of Certified Quilt Judges, and is qualified to judge Masterpiece Quilts. She is also a Qualified Instructor for the Two Day Judging Seminar offered by the National Association of Certified Quilt Judges. This seminar is intended for those who wish to improve their quiltmaking skills, or to become quilt judges.

Having won numerous local, regional and national awards, her designs can be found in books and magazines, and her quilts have been commissioned by Indiana University and private collections. She spends her time judging, lecturing, designing and teaching. She also enjoys making quilts for competition, family and charity.

Karen graduated from the Indiana University Kelley School of Business. She and her husband live on 30 wooded acres near Bloomington, Indiana.  They are parents to three grown sons, and are grandparents to Jordan, Lee, Kira, Vivienne, James and Joelle.

Linda Luggen Linda has spent over thirty years sharing her knowledge of quilts and quiltmaking. She designs many of her own appliqué patterns. Her color sense and multi-layer techniques have led her to a new world of freedom in creative appliqué designs that she loves to share.

Her quilts have won awards nationally and have been published in Lady’s Circle Patchwork Quilts and Great American Quilts. She has written for Quilters Newsletter Magazine. Her home and quilts were featured in Romantic Homes. Her article on judging was published in the NQA Quilting Quarterly and in the Vic Quilter (a Victoria, Australia quilt magazine). She has taught seminars and lectured nationally. At a Cincinnati Fall Flower Show at Coney Island she was the featured artist, displaying 20 quilts pertaining to flowers and nature.

She has served as Secretary, Vice-President and Program Coordinator, and President of the Ohio Valley Quilters Guild. She worked as co-facility coordinator for the Sew Near To My Heart Quilt Show in Cincinnati.

Linda is a National Quilting Association Certified Judge and is a member of the National Association of Certified Quilt Judges. She has served as Nominating Committee Chairman and Chairman of the Midwest Judges Retreat.

Her judging philosophy is quite simple. Kind, thoughtful, knowledgeable judging comments should be made to praise, inform and encourage the quilter to strive to do their best and to be proud of their accomplishments.
